Our Story

The Davy Prize began in 2024 as the initiative of founder, Sandra Fairthorne, and with the support of the Malmsbury Mail news service in Central Highlands, Victoria

As a successful playwright herself, Sandra began running successful writing workshops and editing work for aspiring writers. This lead to a belief in the importance of creating opportunities for writers to throw their heart after their passion and submit written pieces for appraisal. Creating a regional writing competition seemed the best way to achieve this, and, in so doing, provide an opening for rural and regional writers to be seen.

The award is named after Mr Davy, an early editor of the Malmsbury Mail, known for his ability to identify and nurture writing talent in the pioneering community.
